As with many others, in school I was taught Darwin’s theory of evolution, yet I also believed in God and also like many others, I heard the bible stories of how God created the world, the universe and all living things. I realized early on that in order to have certainty as to which version was correct, a lifelong intensive study of both would be needed and this wasn’t a road I wanted to travel. So I opened myself to both possibilities and trusted God that He knew which process really took place.
I will now tell you though that after reading Grant R. Jeffery’s book, “Creation: Remarkable Evidence of God’s Design”, I now lean more towards the creation side, or at least a combination of both. The facts and figures that Jeffery provides are: startling, amazing, and far too precise to be mere coincidences or random occurrences. His detailed descriptions of the intricacies of the human eye and the human brain, on their own are enough to make anyone consider a deliberate design. When delving into other scientific realms such as Astronomy, DNA, the newly found flaws within the Evolution theory, the reader will not be able to help themselves from giving Jeffery’s research much consideration.
One should know as well that the facts and figures which Jeffery states go well beyond his own investigations. Very early in the book, Jeffery speaks of a survey which clearly shows a shift in the scientific community. For over a century, the majority of the scientific community, educators, etc., advocated the atheistic view of evolution, while refuting the concept of creation. In the past forty years however, new scientific discoveries have lead many scientists to accept the possibility that the complexities of the universe and human existence necessitates an intelligent design. The survey showed that 40% of a thousand top scientists (in a variety of fields) now believe in God as a Supreme Being - an intelligent designer. This is a noteworthy scientific and sociological paradigm shift and the author, using a wealth of resources and examples, describes how this shift takes place over the past few decades. “Although more than one hundred text books are quoted in the documentation in the Selected Biography and in the End Notes, these books represent only a fraction of the authors and researchers who have influenced and challenged my thinking about the subject of Creation.” Acknowledgements
Jeffery also clearly lays out a scenario which seems to make many of today’s Christians apathetic in their faith. “Tragically, hundreds of millions of Christians, as well as millions of non-Christians, have accepted unconditionally that the theory of evolution as taught in the high schools and universities must be Scientifically true. Logically, if evolution is true, then the Bible’s account of Creation as recorded in the first two chapters of Genesis that totally contradicts evolution must be false and nothing more than a myth.” Pg. 11 “I believe that one of the major reasons for the superficial nature of the faith of many Christians in North America and Europe is that their acceptance of the __ theory of evolution has created a logical contradiction, a ‘double-mindedness’ that inevitably weakens their faith.....” Pg. 12
Sadly though Jeffery’s book has two main flaws of its own. First, he has a habit of repeating several pieces of data over and over again, which can end up backfiring in that it gets to the point where it can make a person wonder if he’s trying too hard to convince. The data impresses on the first try. It doesn’t need a third, fourth, or fifth repeat, especially with the exact (or almost exact) same wording.
The second flaw, which I found extremely disheartening was the last chapter. - It shouldn’t be there. Frankly, this chapter comes across as one big guilt trip to try to force the reader into accepting the “Creation theory.” It’s as if Jeffery is saying: “Well, if the facts and figures don’t convince you into believing, then I’ll add this guilt trip for extra assurance. But what Jeffery may not realize is that he’s done an excellent job of justifying Creation in the first eight chapters (including the Introduction) and rather than reinforcing all of his arguments, the last chapter seems to strip his credibility.
This is a book that is well worth reading, regardless of which side of the debate you’re on; but if you find yourself being impressed by Jeffery’s research and factual data, you might want to leave well enough alone and skip the final chapter.
