Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada, in 1959, Gerianne B. Van
Vugt (nee Hull) moved to the province of Ontario, at age eleven. During
her years there, she attended The Sheridan College Institute of
Technology and Advanced Learning, (formerly Sheridan College) in
Oakville and received her Diploma in Human Services Administration. In
1986, she attended George Brown College, in Toronto, where she
graduated with honours from its Human Services Management Program.
In 1989, she and her husband, Dan, moved to Pasadena, Newfoundland.
There Gerianne revived her literary interest, when she took on the
position of Editor of a monthly economic development newsletter,
published by a
local business development centre - The Venture Centre.
Gerianne decided to embark into new territory in 1997, by independently
publishing her first two books. Early that year “Is That Wheelchair
Really Dead?... Gerianne's Humorous (and Useful) Little Booklet on
Creative Wheelchair Repairs” was released. This publication combined
her literary talent with her firsthand knowledge of being a wheelchair
user and brought you her personal experiences with what she refers to
as "creative, non-conventional, wheelchair repairs."
In October of that same year, Gerianne touched the hearts of many with
her emotional book of original poetry and personal reflections, in “A
Little Insight.” In Gerianne's own words "Writing ‘A Little Insight’
was like exposing the deepest recesses of my soul, for all the world to
see. Doing so was as essential to me as breathing, yet at times when I
stopped to think about just how much I was revealing about myself, I
felt terrified!"
Upon the Van Vugt’s arrival to Halifax, in the fall of 1999, Gerianne
began to let her spiritual / faith side emerge. Both she and Dan began
attending a local church. For Gerianne this church was a very warm and
welcoming place. It wasn’t long before she was an active member of the
church. She served on Parish Council for three years, took on the
Editorship of the church’s newsletter for nearly two years, and was a
contributing writer for The Diocesan Times - a provincial Anglican
newspaper. During this time, Gerianne’s faith and commitment to God
grew stronger, deeper & more steadfast. Early in 2003, Gerianne
felt a new calling on her heart. She now devotes much of her time to
her web site: www.written-in-faith.net.
Now a permanent resident of Halifax, - a city that she loves immensely,
Gerianne says this: "From my very first visit, Halifax grabbed hold of
my heart and wouldn't let go. I wish I was born here. It truly feels
right for me. I think of it as home. I'm thrilled to finally be living
here!"
Gerianne's poetry has also been published in New York, Texas and
Newfoundland and of course many of her articles have been printed in
various publications.
